Puilaurens Castle
Primarily, the Puilaurens Castle functioned as a fortified refuge and defensive stronghold. The Château de Puilaurens was established on Mont Ardu and appears in historical records as early as 958 when Lothair confirmed a donation by Sunifred II, Count of Urgell, to the Abbey of Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa. The castle saw significant developments in the 13th century, including fortifications ordered by Louis IX of France around 1255.
Situated in the commune of Lapradelle-Puilaurens in the Aude département of France, the Château de Puilaurens overlooks the Boulzane Valley and the villages of Lapradelle and Puilaurens. It is accessible via a path from Axat.
